When Victory Feels Far Away

What if, in our longing and searching for big victories, we are actually failing to see all the victories right in front of us?

I have been struggling with the concept of victory in Christ for a while because I have a number of friends who just keep facing hardship after hardship, and others where it just seems like God is letting them get pounded by Satan and the humans that are following Satan’s leading. I have cried out to God on so many occasions asking the questions: “When do we as Christians get to win, God? Where are our victories? When do we get to be victorious and watch evil get defeated?”

This last week it hit me that victories are happening all around me, I’m just not seeing them because I’m not paying enough attention. I’m looking at the big picture, that this big problem isn’t getting solved, this person is still struggling with a health issue, or that person is still trying to find a job, etc. But when I really stop and look closer at the true victories in life, I start seeing victories in Christ everywhere.

Victories are when in the power of Christ we thwart Satan’s plans to destroy us or use us to spread his evil rather than God’s goodness and glory. Even though we might still be facing financial hardships, struggling with health issues, wishing for better relationships, desiring freedom from our pasts, etc. every moment we acknowledge, turn, and pursue God’s power over Satan’s plans and pressures is a victory. Every moment we love instead of hate, we forgive instead of condemn, we embrace light instead of darkness, we have courage instead of cowardice, we have faith instead of fear, and we praise instead of complain, etc., we are taking part in an incredible victory in Christ.

Victory, as Christians, isn’t just the big moments, its in every small moment we live for God rather than for Satan.

1John 5:4 “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”

Rom 5:1-6 “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly….

Rom 10:17 “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

1John 5:2-4 “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”

So the truth is, victory is never far away. If you’re struggling with wanting victory in your life, start with the next moment and make that a victory by seeking Christ first and pursing His will.
